On April 25th 1915, NZ and Australian soldiers, known as the ANZACs landed at Gallipoli, Turkey as part of their alliance with the British and French forces to try and gain control of the Dardanelles Strait. This would allow the allies naval forces to attack Istanbul.
The British and French forces made the main landing at Cape Helles on the southern tip of Gallipoli whilst the ANZACS landed 2 kilometers north of their intended landing place which was a huge mistake. On the peninsula the ANZACS encountered Ottoman forces in the hilly land above the beach which is now known as ANZAC cove. As the ANZACS were invading many were shot dead before they even reached the beach. Others reached the beach where they dug tunnels and cover trying to hide from the Ottoman forces that were firing from above. It was time to move. Throughout many days the ANZACs fought their way up the hill. They were now about halfway up the cliff.
After many days water had become low and the troops now had a new problem. All the dead corps around them were attracting flies and other pests that carried deadly diseases. The Allies were soon informed about the landing and they attempted to help. The Allies made distractions for the ANZACS to attack and try gain control of high ground. The ANZAC won 2 out of 3 battles. They lost their last battle which was the one they needed for the high ground. On the last battle the Turks realised and 5,000 more soldiers came and killed the a lot of the ANZAC soldiers. After that battle the ANZAC troops that were left fought their battles and tried to make it back to the ships to return home.
This brutal attack on gallipoli caused nearly 400,000 casualties, over 130,000 deaths. 66.26% of the deaths were Turks, 8.78% were ANZAC Soldiers and the rest was British and Irish soldiers. This mistake was terrible for everyone not just the ANZACS. Now on April 25th we remember the soldiers that lost their lives fighting for our country. In Gallipoli you can also get access to walk on the same path that our soldiers walked as they were attacking before they were killed. April 25th is a sad day for many people in New Zealand, Australia and Turkey because of this brutal event.
