The day had finally come. My dad and I had been traveling around the coast of America meeting up with friends and family for the past week. Now, we were only half an hour away from meeting my penpal, Avery.
“Are we there yet?” I asked dad for the one millionth time. We had been traveling in the car for over 2 hours and I was getting a bit impatient, I think dad was too.
“Rory, stop asking! We will get there when we get there!” That must have also been the one millionth time he has said that!
After a quick stop at the gas station for some iced tea and beef jerky we were there, sitting in the driveway of their house. I gazed up in wonder, their house was huge! All the way here I was ready to hop out of the car and meet my penpal for the first time. But now, my heart was beating so fast it was popping out of my chest and I definitely didn’t feel like going anywhere anytime soon.
Eventually, I got out of the car and joined dad waiting at the front of the car . I forced my shaky legs to walk behind dad and just like that, we were at the front door, dad reaching his hand up to knock, but before he could, the door swung open wide, revealing what must have been Avery’s dad.
“Rob!” he exclaimed
“Brandon!” dad yelled back. I rolled my eyes at their over enthusiasm of seeing each other.
“And you must be Rory!” Brandon said, turning to look at me. I nodded quietly and stepped inside after dad.
After my dad and Brandon had finished a huge conversation about american football and I was sick of throwing toys for the dog I plucked up the courage to ask where Avery was.
“Oh. Avery, Brady and their mum are just coming back from the movies as we speak. Sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.” I nodded again and left to go get a snack, right when Avery decided to come through the door, alongside her little brother, Brady and their mum, Donna.
We both looked at each other. Waiting for the other to make the first move.
“Hi.” I eventually said. Avery replied with a ‘hey’. Her mum, who was standing on the sideline couldn’t contain her excitement much longer. She leapt forward and gave me a quick hug.
“It’s so nice to meet you!” She said in her thick american accent. “Quick, get together, let’s take a photo!” Avery and I awkwardly stood about a metre away from each other.
“Great!” Donna exclaimed.
That night Avery and I were talking like we had known each other for years. We sat around the campfire with her family and my dad, making the best smores I have ever had in my entire life! That night I slept on the pull out bed that was under hers. I just couldn’t believe that I was there. All the way on the other side of world to my bed, in the same room as my penpal! Unreal!
