Henri Matisse first discovered his love for art when he had an attack of appendicitis and had to have surgery. When he was recovering from the surgery his mother gave him a paint box. He was 21, when he discovered painting and that he wanted to become an artist.

Henri Matisse’s first teacher told him that he would never learn how to draw but he didn’t listen. In the beginning of his discovery of art he painted still-lifes and landscapes and was beginning to see that he was pretty talented.

In 1905, Matisse along with a group of artists became known as “Fauves”. In english that means “The Wild Beasts”. The style that the group uses in their paintings are expressive and use natural colours of what subject they are doing. They also use aggressive brush strokes and bold primary colours.

In the 1940’s Henri Matisse created cut paper collages, often larger pictures called Gouaches Decoupes. He used this technique that is called painting with scissors. The pieces that he would make shows that he has an eye for colour and geometry in a simple but powerful way.

Franks Stella’s art pieces are mostly shapes put together to make different patterns or objects. Most of Frank Stella’s art pieces are done by paint.
