Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children Novel Study
Pre-Reading Questions
Do you believe that there is such a thing as time travel?
I do believe that there is such thing as time travel because you don't where life can take you. Maybe one day you could end up in another world because maybe in the future, people would have invented time travel. I also believe in time travel because I believe anything can happen to anyone.
Do you think there could be another type of person out there we don’t know about?
I think they might be or might not be another type of person out there. I think they might be more because maybe there could be more characters in the story that we don't know about and might come later in the story. I also think there is a possibility that there isn’t because maybe because maybe they have already mentioned the people in the story and there might not be anymore.
Do you believe in monsters?
I don’t believe in monsters because most of the time they are made up and nobody in real life so far has even had a sighting of any real monsters. EG: They talk about having sightings of seeing bigfoot but actually no one has even spotted bigfoot because otherwise they would have took a photo or something. They have also made a tv show called finding bigfoot and show something moving in the bushes or sounds but that could be somebody dressed up as bigfoot or making those sounds. I do believe in monsters like people being monsters by bullying and abusing people.
Do you believe in people having special powers?
I do believe that some people have special powers. I believe that people have special powers because some people may be gifted like in different ways. Like some people can do magic but some of the things seem impossible. EG: This magician called Dynamo. Dynamo can walk casually along a street and then all of a sudden he can just fall and disappear. I think he has special powers because he can do things on the spot and he hasn’t planned on where he is going to do it but can just do magic that seems impossible. I believe that in real life people do have special powers and can help people in many ways.
Connections:
Write about an experience where you had to trust someone even if you thought it was a bad idea.
When I was about 5 or 6 I went to Australia. Me and my family went to this park or something and I was looking at a seals and sharks and whales in this cave things outside. Then I had wandered off and I got lost and couldn’t find my family. Then I had started crying and this lady had come over and asked me if I was ok. I said I lost my parents and she said she would help me go find them. Then I said yes and I was really scared because I didn’t know where she was going to take me and what if she does something bad to me. Then my parents and sister had finally found me and I ran to my parents and started crying even more.
If time travel were possible, when and where would you go and why?
I would probably go back in time to when my parents were children and watch them grow up and see what there life was like. For EG: When they went to school and when they came home what they would do and what kind of homework they would get. I would also like to travel into the future so I can see what life is like for me and how the world is and if global warming has affected the world badly or is uncontrolling. I would also want to see who is my family and if any of my parents and my sister is still alive and where they are living.
During Reading Questions:
Page 26- How would you explain the friendship between Ricky and Jacob? Ricky and Jacob has a is unusual relationship. I think this because they don't really act like friends and they don't really seem to like each other. Also in the book Ricky abandoned Jacob and that means that they are probably not true friends because if you are in trouble your friends will always help you out.
Page 29- It never explained what really killed his grandfather. Was it the "monster" Jacob saw in the woods?
The monster was described as a man with octopus tentacles coming out of his mouth. He had black eyes or murky eyes. One of the monsters that Jacob has seen his grandfather had seen when he was on the island. Everybody else thinks that Jacob didn’t see the monster because of Ricky who was there at the scene and didn't see the monster.
Page 91- When Oggie doesn't remember one person surviving the bombing does this seem like he's hiding more? Use evidence from the text to explain your answer.
Oggie might have forgotten or might not want to tell about the bombing. I think maybe he doesn’t want to tell because maybe he wants to keep it a secret because maybe it is personal. I think he might also keep it to himself because it might be a something sad and he doesn’t want to talk about it. Another possibility is that he can’t remember because he is quite old and probably forgotten the person’s name. Their were probably heaps of people in the army so he probably won’t remember all the names so he probably won’t remember who survived in the war.
Page 99- Is his grandfather really all that crazy, or is what he told him as a kid really true? What his grandfather told him it's true because normal people don’t have peculiar powers or is peculiar. Probably the only peculiar thing about humans is somebody can tell the future or something related to that. I think it might also be true because how can he tell so many stories about the peculiar kids and know about all those things and can see monsters.
Page 102- Does the bird symbolize something? Will it later lead him to the woman he's looking for to figure out more about his grandfather? The bird maybe symbolises maybe a person that is brave or not scared of anything. The bird might also symbolise a person that had passed away (died). The bird might also symbolise Miss Peregrine.
Page 196- Do you think Jacob going through the loop so often is a good thing? Explain your answer. I think it might be a good thing because he went to the island to find Miss Peregrine and the children and if he goes into the loop once he might not have found all the information that he needs. I think it might also be a bad idea because because if he gets caught going in and out of the loop then people will ask him why he keeps on going into that creepy house that is abandoned.
Page 204- What questions would you want to ask Miss Peregrine? I would probably ask her how old she is and were she was born and if her parents were peculiar. I would also ask her if it is hard to keep peculiar children hidden and if she goes outside of the loop will she make it dangerous for the children because the monsters would know she lives in the loop.
Page 205- What was the problem with Jacob talking to the children about his time and where he comes from? Maybe because Miss Peregrine's doesn't want them to learn about the future because they would start wanting those things. Also because she might want them to appreciate what they have in the loop and not want them to be sad because they want to go and visit the future and not have those things from the future.
Page 230- How is Jacob similar to his grandfather? Use quotes from the text to support your answer.
Why are you peculiar?
Since when are you different?
When did you see the kids?
Page 239- What are some of the problems that you think will come from Jacob and Emma seeing each other?
One of the problems are if Emma and Jacob see each other all the time they Jacob won’t want to leave because I think that Jacob likes Emma and wants to be around her. Emma won’t want Jacob to leave and Emma would want to come out of the loop so she can be with Jacob. Another problem could be if Emma goes outside the loop with Jacob for a long time and they forgot about the time it could be fatal for Emma because she would start aging very quickly. Another problem I can see is if Emma and Jacob continue to see each other then they might get caught by Miss Peregrine or one of the children that might tell Miss Peregrine or Jacob’s dad might see them and ask Jacob who Emma is.
