Overview
Heidi the author’s friend was offered a job as a ski instructor in Afghanistan and invited the author to come with but the author was doubtful. The author had later said yes and they arrived in February which is when winter starts also. When they left the airport they saw two people from the plane putting on bulletproof vests.They were then picked up by their host whose name was Gul. When they were driving around the author saw ex-police officers missing limbs and soldiers carrying large machine guns. The author says a brief history behind the war in a Afghanistan. The author later said that after three days in Kabul they had to take a road nicknamed the death road because of frequent attacks by the Taliban. The author talked about Bamyan and said that in that area when the Taliban took over the world’s tallest Buddhas were destroyed. He also talks about Bamyan and how it is behind the times he then mentions how NZ helped in the wars. After a couple of weeks snow came in little numbers then big. The author’s friend Heidi was happy. She had been coaching the the author finally decided to join her and on the men’s race he entered and described the race as brutal. Then he says he interviewed a girl who instead of getting married she wanted to become a doctor. The author concludes with kindness of a poor man who gave him food but refused payment but then the author secretly gave the money to the man’s son.
