Holes
Chapter 1
The setting of the story is in a harsh environment, and it is obvious that no one would like to stay there a second longer than they absolutely have to. The cheery name of “Camp Green Lake” obviously doesn’t mean too much to what the place is actually like.
Chapter 2
I do agree that making bad kids dig holes would turn them into good children, because if they learn their lesson, they’ll probably never want to go back again, which means they wouldn’t dare do anything that could send them back to Camp Green Lake.
Some other unpleasant things I’ve heard that are supposed to “build character” are: prison sentences, community service, and injuring punishments like the cane.
Chapter 3
I think the expression “I learn from failure” means that every time you fail at something, it is a chance to try again, but more intelligently this time.
We were playing a throwing and catching game with softballs, gloves were being handed out, and I decided not to take one. I learnt that softballs are hard, and I learnt it the hard way.
Chapter 4
I think that Mr. Sir’s tattoo shows that he is a very tough person, he’s got a tattoo of a pretty deadly animal, and he spits sunflower seed shells out of his mouth like he doesn’t give a second thought about anything else but himself.
Chapter 5
The boys call Mr. Pendanski “Mom” because it makes them feel better to have someone that they feel love them be at the camp. I think the name “Dad” would’ve been better, because most boys enjoy spending more time with their dads than they do with their moms.
Chapter 6
The boys weren’t so sure about Stanley’s crime because Stanley said that the shoes he stole belonged to Clyde Livingston. The other boys probably also looked up to Clyde and couldn’t take it in.
Chapter 7
Stanley learns how hard it really is around Camp Greenlake, because he took a very long time to finish his first hole. He felt a huge sense of pride after his first hole because of how difficult he found it digging his first hole.
Chapter 8
I don’t believe in curses, because I have never actually seen proof of any real curses, because most of the time, unlucky things just mean you are in the wrong place in the wrong time.
Chapter 9
The nickname that X-Ray gave Stanley “Caveman” kind of suits him, because he is the biggest of the group, and has messy hair, just like a caveman would. I do not have a nickname, but if I did have one, it would probably be something near Nerd or Clumsykid.
Chapter 10
The boys always line up in the same order, due to the fact that X-Ray seems to be the leader, and Zero is the least important in the group. It is staggering to see how the others treat Zero, and how Zero copes with it everyday.
Chapter 11
X-Ray asked Stanley to give anything he found over to X-Ray, because he hasn’t found anything yet, even though he’s been at Camp Greenlake for the longest period of time. Stanly agrees to do this probably because he feels sorry for X-Ray. I would’ve done the same thing as Stanley did, because I also feel sorry for X-Ray.
Chapter 12
I agree with Mr. Pendanski, because Stanley made the wrong choice, so he has to take his own responsibilities and fix up his personal mistake. I have made mistakes, and had to fix them myself. I absolutely agree with Mr. Pendanski.
Chapter 13
Stanley gains X-Ray’s trust, because he’s done what X-Ray requested, and without fail, supported him. Stanley lost a fine chance to take the day off, and have some quality leisure time at Camp Greenlake.
Chapter 14
I was very surprised to find out that the Warden is a woman, she also seems very kind, unlike Mr. Sir, because she ordered Mr. Pendanski to refill all the boys’ canteens, even though they had just been filled. I trust that Mr. Sir would not have done anything close to that.
Chapter 15
I think that the others are just going paranoid, because they claim to have seen the spy cameras, even though they didn’t tell Stanley where they were. They could have just been fooling the Caveman, and trying to get him to be afraid of the warden, even though she seems to be quite nice.
Chapter 16
Here's my theory of what happened, before Stanley arrived at Camp Greenlake, Zero had actually been a normal part of the group, but then he started singing the Nursery Rhymes from Sesame Street, and he was deemed brainless, as all that went on inside his head was the Nursery Rhymes. From that day on, he never ever spoke up, or sang songs.
Chapter 17
Zigzag is a thoughtless person, because Stanley had been injured doing the job they all loathed. Zigzag didn’t even care to help Stanley at all, even though the pile of dirt was probably no more bigger than a shovelful of it. Zigzag just waited until Stanley dug it up himself, and then carried on his own work.
Chapter 18
I think that the reason Stanley keeps pushing the lie is because he doesn’t want his parents to worry about him, however, this could turn around if his parents WERE to find out about the camp’s true state, the result would not be a good one.
Chapter 19
Stanley told Mr. Sir that he stole the sunflower seeds just to take the blame for the others, because he didn’t want to get on their bad sides, I know that he has already learnt they aren’t kindest people in the world.
