Chapter 21
Why do you think Zero finishes Stanley’s hole for him?
I think that Zero finished Stanley’s hole because he felt bad about Stanley getting into trouble for things he didn’t do. It is also a bit like a peace offering like, ‘If I help dig your holes then you have to help me learn’.
Chapter 22
Does Stanley seem like a good teacher?
I think that at this point in the story, with Stanley only just having started tutoring, he is a bit nervous and is unsure of what to do. But I am sure that he is probably going to get better later in the story, same with zero.
Have you ever tutored anyone?
I have not properly tutored anyone but I have helped people out with things when they ask for help. I am also going to try and be a teacher when I am older, so I might start looking into being a tutor in high school.
What did you learn from the experience?
Well, again I haven’t tutored, but after helping people out I learn a bit about the subject myself because I am usually talking outloud.
Chapter 23
Does the portrait the author paints of Green Lake seem realistic?
It seems very realistic to me as the reader, but from what the author says that Camp Green Lake is like right now, I can imagine that Stanley wouldn’t believe that for a second because of the vast, dry, wasteland.
Can you point to any details that strike you as too good to be true?
Nothing in this chapter really strikes me as too good to be true, but in the story it would seem very unlikely that that was how the people lived before how it is now, all dry, cracked land.
Chapter 24
How does Mr. Sir get back at Stanley?
Mr Sir gets back at Stanley by not only refusing to fill Stanley’s canteen, but letting the water just fall onto the scorching ground. As well as the fact that he does it right in front of him.
Do you think it is Stanley’s fault that Mr. Sir got scratched?
It is definitely not Stanley's fault that Mr Sir got scratched because he didn’t even take the sunflower seed sin the first place. It was also Mr Sir’s idea to bring Stanley into the danger zone; the warden's cabin.
Chapter 25.
Does it seem like Sam is a respected member of the Green Lake community?
I think that the people respect him for his onions, but not for who he actually is. To them, he is just a man who they buy the town's best onions from.
Why or why not?
Because Sam was black, and back in their days, people weren’t allowed to be friends with somebody a different colour to them.
Chapter 26.
Based on the facts the author gives you, can you answer the question, “Whom did God punish?”
I think that he didn’t punish anyone exactly, but instead the whole town. The drought caused people to move away and probably killed some people. Maybe because people from the town had been so foolish in their actions the whole town had to suffer the consequences. The god could also be trying to send message, like how racism needs to stop.
Chapter 27.
Why don’t the other boys approve of Stanley and Zero’s arrangement?
I believe that the other boys are not too happy with Stanley and Zero’s arrangement because digging holes is hard and requires a lot of hard work. They are probably a bit jealous that Stanley gets to sit out for a bit and watch the fastest digger help him.
Do you think it is fair to both boys?
I think that for Stanley and Zero it is very fair, because Stanley is teaching Zero to read and Zero is helping Stanley dig his hole. Besides, Zero offered to help Stanley, otherwise, Stanley wasn’t expecting anything in return.
Why or why not?
Because Zero and Stanley are both happy with this arrangement and Zero was the one offering to help Stanley dig his holes, not Stankey asking, or even forcing Zero to do it. Maybe that's what the other boys think he is doing?
Chapter 28.
Who else has turquoise-studded boots like Kate Barlow’s?
The warden is the one with turquoise studded boots like Kate Barlow
Chapter 29.
What do you think is the significance of Stanley’s vision of the giant thumb?
His grandfather would talk about it alot and everyone thought that he had just gone crazy. Stanley might think that his grand fathers vision of ‘god’s thumb’ is the mountain ahead of him. He also thinks that maybe he could be near where his grandfather came across Kate Barlow.
Chapter 30.
Why doesn’t Stanley fight back when Zigzag taunts him?
Because Stanley knows that Zigzag probably has more fighting knowledge than him and even though Stanley is bigger, Zigzag is most likely better.
What would you do in his position?
I would have probably run away to Mr Pendanski or someone like that, or I would have gotten some sort of weapon, like a shovel.
