Chapter One
Camp Green Lake. A beautiful camp, resting in the middle of a forest, a shiny crystal clear lake between the trees. Flowers and shrubs everywhere. Greenery in every direction. That is what I think when I hear the name Camp Green Lake. In reality Camp Green Lake is not green at all. There is no lake and no greenery. All there is at Camp Green Lake are holes. Everywhere you look you can see holes, holes and holes. Nothing but holes. Camp Green Lake is not a paradise it is a horrible camp for juvenile boys, that have commited a crime.
Chapter Two
Digging Holes can make you a good person along with a bad person. This is because digging holes in extreme heat and not much water in your bottle can make you loathe digging holes. So when you leave Camp you decide that you don’t want to do anything bad otherwise you will end back up at Camp Green Lake holding a shovel and digging holes at 4am in the morning. Digging holes could also make you a worse person because you would want revenge on the people who made you dig the endless holes. People around the world will make you do similar things like this to build your character. Sometimes these tactics work but sometimes they don’t.
Chapter Three
“I learn from failure.” This means that you learn from your mistakes and make sure that the same mistake won’t happen over and over again. A time when I have learned from my failure/mistake was when I dropped my phone on the ground and cracked my screen. After that day I never dropped anything on the ground again just in case I would break it and permanently damage it. After this experience I learned to value things in life and not take anything for granted.
Chapter Four
Mister Sir’s has one tattoo. The tattoo is a rattlesnake. Rattlesnakes are found at Camp Green Lake. Mister Sir may have been bitten by a rattlesnake but fortunately survived. He also might have killed many rattlesnakes that tried to bite the people at Camp Green Lake.
Chapter Five
The boys call Mr Pendanski ‘Mom’ because Mr Pendanski treats the boys as their mom would treat them because he calls them by their real name not their nickname. He also tells them what to do just like their mom would. He also takes care of them like a mother.
Chapter Six
The boys don’t believe that Stanley stole the sneakers because they belong to a really famous basketball player Clyde Livingston and the shoes are worth thousands of dollars. The shoes were also kept safely at an orphanage. Stanley also told the boys that the sneakers fell from the sky and I don’t think anybody would believe that.
Chapter Seven
Stanley learns after digging his first hole that the second holes is the hardest, so is the third and the fourth and the fifth as well as the sixth. Stanley feels proud when he finishes his first hole because he has made the hole exactly 5 feet wide and five feet deep. He is also proud because after all his hard work throughout the day he has finally finished.
Chapter Eight
I believe in curses because I think that where there is good things there are also a few bad things, so if there is such thing as magic there is also such thing as curses. Also my friends say that I am a little bit superstitious because I’m always going on about lucky numbers and unlucky numbers.
Chapter Nine
The nickname that X-Ray gave Stanley is a bit weird because I don’t really understand why Stanley is called Caveman. Nicknames my friends gave me are Dive because my they think I am a complete Diva because I am always fussing about how I look and is my hair perfect? Another nickname I was given was Cling Wrap because I am really clingy. The last nickname I was given was Soni Enterprise and Soni Company because my last name is Soni and at the first day of school my friends thought my family invented the Sony tv and Sony movies.
Chapter Ten
The boys always line up in the same line because it is the line of popularity. For example X-Ray the boss and the most popular between the boys is at the front and Zero the least popular at the back.
Chapter Eleven
X-Ray asked Stanley to give him anything he found because X-Ray tells us that he has been here for over a year and that he deserves to get at least one day off. Stanley agrees to this because he doesn’t want to mess with X-Ray as he his like the leader of the gang.
Chapter Twelve
When Mr Pendanski says to Stanley that he made the mess he had to fix it, I agree with this because if you do something wrong you are the one who has to fix the mistake not your friends, not your family just you, but in this case I disagree with the statement because Stanley didn’t do anything he is innocent because he didn't steal Clyde Livingston’s shoes.
Chapter Thirteen
Stanley gets to move up one space in the line when he gives X-Ray the box. He loses a chance to have a day off from digging holes in the hot sun all day long.
Chapter Fourteen
I was surprised that the Warden was a woman because I didn’t expect there to be a warden who is a woman in a Camp filled with crime committed boys. The Warden has red, hair, freckles, cowboy boots and she wears a jacket.
Chapter Fifteen
I think the campers and Zigzag believe that the Warden has cameras all over the place is true because I think that the Warden is always bored in her cabin so she likes to watch the campers and listen to them and she might like to know what's going on. I know this because Stanley says that maybe X-Ray didn’t talk about the small box because X-Ray may be afraid that the Warden might find out and give Stanley the day off and not him.
Chapter Sixteen
Zero may not be familiar with the nursery rhymes of Sesame Street because he may have come from a place where there is no tv or he may not be able to afford for a tv.
Chapter Seventeen
Stanley learns that his dirt pile was on top of Zigzag’s dirt pile. He also learns the Zigzag doesn’t care whether Stanley gets hurt or not just as long as Zigzag doesn’t have to do Stanley’s half of the work it is all ok.
Chapter Eighteen
I think that Stanley lies to his parents because he doesn’t want them to worry about him. He doesn’t want his parents to feel unnecessary stress for him.
Chapter Nineteen
Stanley tells Mr Sir that he stole the sunflower seeds so his friends don’t get in trouble and also he said this so none of his friends became his enemies.
Chapter Twenty
The Warden doesn’t raise her voice when she is mad because she does not want to intimidate the boys because they might run away and because the Warden is looking for something she needs the boys to dig holes but if they all run away then nobody would dig the holes for the Warden. Also the Warden might not raise her voice because she may want to add tension and make the boys more scared of her. So when the boys get scared they would not want to mess with her.
Chapter Twenty-One
Zero finishes Stanley's hole for him because I think that he thinks that Stanley took the blame for stealing the sunflower seeds. He also thinks that because he dug his hole for Stanley might teach him to read and write.
Chapter Twenty- Two
Stanley is a good teacher because he teaches Zero how to write and read and write. He also makes Zero’s smile so big that it is bigger than his face. I think that I would make a good tutor because I love to learn and teach other people. I have had experience in tutoring as I have tutored my younger brother many times.
Chapter Twenty - Three
The picture the author paints of Camp Green Lake does seem realistic but the author mentions that in the hot, dry wasteland it hasn’t rained in over 110 years and there are two healthy looking trees by the warden’s cabin in a place where it rarely ever rains.
Chapter Twenty - Four
Mr Sir gets back at Stanley by not pouring water in his canteen but pouring water on the ground and leaving Stanley thirsty until Mr Pendanski or somebody else comes to refill the canteens. I do not think it is Stanley’s fault that Mr Sir got scratched. It is Mr Sir’s fault because the Warden didn’t care if a child ate his Sunflower Seeds and that he should have let it go instead of making everything a big deal.
Chapter Twenty - Five
Sam do seems like a respected member of the community because his onions could cure anything for example: his onions made Mary Lou live longer than any other donkey and could do the same for any human. His raw onions could also cure Asthma and Diabetes.
Chapter Twenty - Six
God punished Kate Barlow because she kissed a man not her colour and didn’t go by the law. She was also bitten by a Yellow-Spotted lizard and was tourchered by her ex-student and Trout Walker. Sam was also punished as he and Mary Lou was killed by Trout Walker.
Chapter Twenty - Seven
The other boys do not approve of Stanley and Zeros arrangement because he thinks that Stanley is being racist to Zero and making him do an hour of work while he can relax. The boys also think that it is not fair because Stanley gers and hour of working while they don’t.
Chapter Twenty - Eight
The Warden also has turquoise studded boots that look exactly like Kate Barlow.
Chapter Twenty - Nine
The significance of Stanley's sighting of the thumb makes him think of his great great grandfather who was robbed by the outlaw Kissin’ Kate Barlow and he told everyone he took refuge in God's Thumb, until he was found.
Chapter Thirty
Stanley doesn't fight back when Zigzag taunts him because he is worried that Zigzag might annoy him even more. If I was in this position then I would ignore Zigzag or tell him to quit it. If that didn’t work and he started hitting me I would most likely hit him back and report him to Mr Pendanski.
Chapter Thirty - One
Stanley doesn’t go after Zero because he is was worried it is too late and that Zero might’ve already died or would have gone to far away and that nobody would be able to find him. Not even Stanley.
Chapter Thirty - Two
What worried Stanley the most was that what if Zero had died. His only friend and student. Also he thought that if he went for zero without and water and food he along with Zero may also die.
Chapter Thirty - Three
Stanley tried to steal the water truck in hope to find his friend Zero. His logic for stealing the water truck was that if he found Zero he would most likely be thirsty and close to dead.Sadly stealing the water truck didn’t work out so Stanley ran away from Camp Green Lake to find Zero. If I was in Stanley place I would have gotten my backpack filled it with new clothes, food and water and gone to look for Zero.
Chapter Thirty - Four
Stanley kept walking towards the big thumb because I think he felt a connection between him and the mountain or he was curious to see what is on top of it.
Chapter Thirty - Five
Stanley and Zero’s relationship at this point of the story is pretty strong as they are now best friends and feel that they only have each other in Camp Green Lake. I also think they might brothers more than friends. This is because they are always there for each other and they care about one and other.
Chapter Thirty - Six
Stanley learns that Zero is a fast learner and he can pick things up quickly. Stanley likes to teach Zero this is because Zero really does want to learn and is fun to teach.
Chapter Thirty - Seven
Stanley suddenly calls Zero Hector because it is Zero’s real name and he calls him Hector Zeroni because he is excited when he sees water. He is excited when he sees water because she hasn’t had any water for a long time.
Chapter Thirty - Eight
I have attempted something impossible when I was in year 5 my school took us on a trip to Sonshine Ranch. There was a flying fox 300m from the ground. I was afraid of heights but not anymore. To me that flying fox seemed impossible but when I did it wasn’t that bad From this experience I learnt that facing my fears is not actually a bad thing.
Chapter Thirty - Nine
Zero choses this moment to confess about the shoes because Stanley was really nice to him when unknowingly he got Stanley stuck here in the first place. He decided to confess because he must have been feeling really bad. ‘
Chapter Forty
Stanley was surprised to see the shovel and the jars so far down the mountain because I think he remembered to have it the shovel and jars down more higher up. He thinks they must have rolled down the hill.
Chapter Forty - One
The situation Zero and Stanley are in right is mostly negative but is positive because he learnt how to be tough and after all the pain they’ve been through they don't mind anything or pain anymore.
Chapter Forty - Two
The difference between destiny and coincidence is because destiny is hat was meant to happen and coincidence is when two things that are related in some ways happen at the same time. I believe in destiny because you can’t write your own destiny and coincidences are also like destiny because they were meant to happen and everything that happens happens for a reason.
Chapter Forty - Three
After hearing Zero’s story Stanley wonders what his parents may be going through if the Warden told his parents he was dead. He couldn’t get rid of the image in his mind when he thought what his parents might look like if he had died.
Chapter Forty - Four
Stanley and Zero feel shocked and surprised when the Warden confronts them and think that the Warden would most likely kill them. I think they must be thinking ‘How on earth did she find me?’ They also would’ve been scared.
Chapter Forty - Five
I learnt that the Warden is evil and a liar. I also found out that the Warden had no money. She didn’t care whether the kids kept digging holes or not all she cared about was the suitcase Stanley and Zero had found.
Chapter Forty - Six
Zro gives Stanley the thumbs up sign because he is happy the the Warden was proved wrong and that Stanley could go home.
Chapter Forty - Seven
Trout WALKER was the man who killed Mary Lou and Sam and he was the same one who tortured Kate Barlow after the lake was dried up. He also burned down the school house back hen the lake was not dried up.
Chapter Forty - Eight
Stanley won’t leave without Hector because now Stanley and Hector Zeroni (Zero) is like Stanley’s brother and Stanley feels that the Warden, Mr Sir and Mr Pendanski would torture him for running away and would most likely kill him.
Chapter Forty - Nine
“... and for the first time in over a hundred years, a drop
of rain fell into the empty lake.” I think that this is important because it hasn’t rained in Camp Green Lake for over 110 years. This is a good way to end Part II because it means that Camp Green Lake won’t be a horrible dry place but instead it would live up to its name and be Green and have a perfectly flowing lake.
Chapter Fifty
Stanley had changed throughout this story as at the beginning of the book he was very fat but now he is a bit too skinny. Also his personality has changed. Before he was scared but now his is brave and daring.
